Development of various molecular biology technologies, including methods for next-generation sequencing and SNP-microarrays made the detailed characterization of the participants of large-scale population-based genome studies possible as well as the obtaining of other molecular "ome" phenotypes: quantitative information on the levels of transcripts (transcriptome), methylation of the genome (epigenome), metabolites (metabolome), glycosylation (glycome), composition of symbiotic microbiome and so on. The total amount of accumulated data is now enormous.
The overall aim of the laboratory is the development and improvement of experimental and statistical methods to analyze the "ome" data to find new biomarkers of complex human diseases. For this purpose high genomics and glycomics techniques are introduced into laboratory practice, allowing to receive "ome" data.
The focus of research is the method of profiling blood plasma glycome and other biological fluids by capillary gel electrophoresis with fluorescence detection (CGE-LIF). An important task of the laboratory is to develop new and effective statistical and computational methods for the analysis of the experimental "ome" data. In particular methods of glycomic and genomic data integration are being developed and applied that were received through the next-generation sequencing for the study of complex human traits.
In addition, the laboratory together with the Dutch team from the Department of Genetics, Medical Center at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) is engaged in the analysis of metagenomic human data. Together with a group from the University of Liege (Belgium) researchers of the laboratory are engaged in study of the methodology and analysis of a wide range of data of agricultural importance.
International partners of the laboratory: Department of Genetics, Medical Center at University of Groningen (Netherlands), laboratory Genos (Croatia) Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Liege (Belgium).
