Division of Laser Physics and Innovation Technologies (OLFiT) at Novosibirsk State University (NSU) is a leading University division in photonics. It is located in the University Laboratory Building (rooms 011 and 671). The majority of the Division’s employees work at the University full time. For over 30 years the Division of Laser Physics and Innovation Technologies (the Laboratory of Laser Systems until 2011) has been actively and successfully involved in research and development of modern knowledge-based systems and technologies in photonics, including lasers, laser systems, optical amplifiers, optic-electronic devices and laser optic technologies for their application in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and technology. The Division is a member of the Aston-NSU International Centre for Photonics. The research interests of the Division are traditionally connected with the study of physical proccess in laser systems and under the influence of laser radiation. It covers laser physics (the research into oscillation regimes in different systems), non-linear optics (non-linear transformation of radiation, supercontinum generation), photonics of fiber systems (research into ultra-short pulse fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers), nanotechnology, telecommunications and other research areas, including such interdisciplinary fields as nanophotonics, laser medicine, quantum metrology, etc.)
The following research areas are among the fundamental ones the Laboratory participates in: the study of physical processes involved in the formation, propagation and evolution of the optical of optic-temporal spatially-localized and spatial temporal formations in nonlinear dispersive systems either single and bound solitons or quasisolitons, coherent and non-coherent light waves and wavepackets, dynamic structures, creation of theoretical models and numerical methods of calculation to identify and study common patterns in physical phenomena and processes in the sources of laser radiation, establishing physical foundations to achieve unique or record-breaking parameters of laser radiation, the study of non-linear optical interactions between ultrashort light impulses with the substance to generate a supercontinuum and harmonics of optical radiation, Raman scattering, pulse time compression, Kerr-type nonlinearity, saturable absorption, dispersion and polarization effects, stability of single wave disturbances.
The Division has been involved in exploratory work in the following areas: modes of solid state, fiber optics and hybryd laser systems performance, the development and research into the methods of radiation modes, stabilisation of radiation parametres, control of laser radiation parametres, including the automatic one; design and development of quantum standards of frequency; design and development of laser systems for special applications: atom cooling and capture, Bose-Einstein condensation, atom optics, research into the properties of new materials; in the field of high technologies: atomic and optical lithography, femtotechnology, materials microprocessing; in medicine: photodynamic therapy, virus inactivation; in metrology: comb-generators, atomic clock; in telecommunications: supercontimuum sources and Raman amplifier).
Research conducted by the Division has been supported by a number of grants from the Ministry of Education and Science RF, the Russian Fund of Fundamental Research, grants from the President RF, Federal targeted programs Research and Teaching Staff for Innovative Russia and Research and Development in Priority Areas of Development of the Russian Scientific and Technological Complex, the 7th European Framework Program FP7. In addition, it is supported through research and development contracts.
Fundamental and exploratory work conducted by the Division within the framework of a large number of both Russian and foreign grants and contracts and with the help of the Division’s spinoffs represented by the company Technnoscan has designed cutting edge laser and laser systems prototypes succefully operating in many research organizations in Russia and the largest international atomic and metrological centers (BARC, DESI, GSI, KAERI, PTB, NIST, NMIJ/AIST, etc), in the leading universities of the world (Stanford, Penn State, Maryland, Vancouver, Hannover and many others), at research institutes and transnational companies, including Samsung, LG, and Panasonic.
In cooperation with the group of companies Technoscan located in Novosibirsk Technopark applied research studies in the following areas was conducted: modelling of radiation properties in accordance with the requirements of practical tasks, practical design and engineering solutions for the systems on a customer’s order, design and production of custom laser systems and equipment as well as the manufacture of laser OEM components.
The Division’s research and development projects are global in nature, which is attested by publications in top-rated international journals (Nature, Photonics, Nature Communications, Optics Express), invited conference reports made by the Division employees and guest speakers, presentations at the largest international conferences on laser physics (Photonics West, CLEO, ECOC, etc.), prototype lasers and laser systems with record-breaking radiation parameters. Based on the results received in the Laboratory 7 Ph.D. theses and one Doctor’s thesis were presented; 2 Medals were awarded by the Russian Academy of Sciences together with the prizes to young researchers for the best developed equipment, methods and techniques as well as new scientific and technical products having scientific and applied value. The Division has several large well-equipped optical bench and a large stock of modern equipment, instrumentation and special equipment, including unique systems manufactured in the laboratory itself. All this equipment is used during the practice sessions senior students at the Physics Department have. The Division’s Base sections: Quantum Optics and Quantum Electronics Sections (Physics Department, NSU).
