The goal of the Laboratory of theoretical and experimental simulation of new photonic devices is development of new efficient methods of numerical modeling of complex nonlinear systems arising in modern optical communication links and fiber lasers.
Head of Lab: Professor Mikhail Fedoruk
The main areas of research:
- Fiber-Optic Communications Systems
- Nonlinear optical signal processing
- Fiber lasers
- Interaction of Laser Radiation and Matter
The most important results obtained by the participants of the laboratory are the following:
- Numerical modeling and improvement of the dispersion management in long-haul high-rate optical fiber links
- The application of the nonlinear diffraction theory to the analysis of femtosecond laser processing of dielectric in sub-critical regime
- The theory of modulation instability (MI) was built; the modulation instability growth rate was calculated as a function of the parameter which control the effect of MI in amplifiers
- The improvement of mathematical models and the numerical modeling of the fiber laser systems
- It is proposed to exploit a self-focusing effect in the atmosphere to assist delivering powerful laser beams from orbit to the ground
