Primary Results:
- An experimental method was developed for point-by-point inscription of refractive index gratings in multi-core fibers using focused femtosecond laser radiation. In this method, the high accuracy of localization in the region of modification of the refractive index creates FBGs in various cores of the fiber. This opens up broad prospects for creating multi-parameter sensory systems to monitor 3D dimensional deformations of objects, as well as for creating multi-core lasers with unique spectral characteristics.
- An analytical model was constructed to explain the process of laser beam spatial self-cleaning in multimode fibers that improves the quality of output radiation at high powers. When the threshold is exceeded, instability starts to develop, and as a result of the four-wave mixing process, energy is exchanged between different fiber modes. An important consequence is that the energy not only goes into the main mode, as previously assumed, but into higher order modes. A numerical simulation confirms these findings. In practice, this means preserving the average number of modes, which was also tested for the first time in this experiment. These studies reveal the root causes that lead to complex spatial-temporal dynamics of laser radiation in multimode fibers. Afterwards, this effect can be applied to many practical fields, for example, when transmitting high quality, high-power laser beams and building the type of amplitude modulators necessary for generating extremely short pulses.
- A study was made of nonlinear coherent structures in multimode and multicore optical fibers arising in systems with mode-selective feedback (lasers), implemented using a fiber Bragg grating with a special spatial structure and a spatial light modulator. In particular, a detailed study of the Kerr self-cleaning effect in graded-index multimode fiber was carried out depending on the input conditions (peak pulse power, angle of incidence). New self-cleaning regimes and stable multimode structures are obtained, respectively, including those for pulses with nonzero angular momentum. A general theory of the so-called thermalization of light in multimode fibers is constructed, considering the conservation of angular momentum. This makes it possible to obtain a generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution for the distribution of multimode fiber modes, which is confirmed by the experimental results
- For a CW Raman fiber laser with mode-selective feedback implemented using a special fiber Bragg grating, a quantitative analysis of the mode distribution of the radiation was carried out. It was found that the total number of modes excited by pump radiation is about 780, while in the generated Stokes beam, the number is two orders of magnitude smaller, with 40% being concentrated in the fundamental mode. In this case, the mode distribution turns out to be closer to the exponential law than to the Rayleigh-Jeans distribution. Generation in the multicore fiber with spatial-spectral selection of radiation based on the fiber Bragg gratings array has also been implemented.
