The NSU Gender Studies Office was established in 2008 by Tatiana Barchunova, Associate Professor at the Social Philosophy and Political Science Section. It is currently one of the leading centers in the country where academic research is conducted on gender studies issues including the nature of gender order, gender regime, justice, inequalities, etc.
The Office’s goal is to provide scientific and informational support to the educational process and integrate the latest social research into education. Particular emphasis is placed on regional issues in the spirit of intersectionality, that is, the use of several social coordinates in the study of society (such as gender, ethnicity, class or status, age, residence, etc.).
The Integral Museum of Everyday Life in Novosibirsk’s Akademgorodok (Novosibirsk, Pravda St., 4) is a regular partner. The Museum presents a reconstruction of Siberian scientists’ lifestyle since the first years of the Novosibirsk Scientific Center. This includes understanding the roles of men and women organizing and conducting research, local community life, and private life. Well-known joint projects with the Museum include public discussions on the history of everyday life, the formation of a collective identity, and everyday life research methodology, including gender aspects. Recent projects: an interactive exhibition “The Karpov Sisters” (Professor M.I. Cheremisina and Academician T.I. Zaslavskaya) (October 2019) at the SB RAS Exhibition Center and an interactive exhibition “Lavrentiev and Others” (December 2019) (the site was provided by the “Gorodok” store).
The Office has produced:
- A scientific translation of Walter Lippmann’s book “Public Opinion”, in which the well-known journalist, political scientist, and sociologist examines the nature, forms of existence, models of the formation and functioning of public opinion, as well as mechanisms for influencing the media (Lippman, Walter.
