The Expert Analytical Center released it’s 2026 scientific productivity ranking for Russian universities. The 2026 analysis includes 142 Russian higher education institutions across 17 subject-specific rankings and 13 thematic subcategories (specialized areas within broader subjects). In 2026, NSU is featured in every ranking and subcategory except for "Management". The University’s strongest performance is in "Physics" and the "Quantum Technologies" subcategory where it was ranked second among all Russian universities. NSU also ranks in the top 10 for "Chemical Technologies", "Archaeology", "Biochemistry", and "Medicine".
In 2025, NSU researchers published over 1,600 articles in Scopus-indexed journals and over 1,200 in Web of Science-indexed journals. A significant portion of the University’s research output appears in top-tier journals as defined by the "White List". These articles have high citation rates. In 2025, 81% of NSU’s articles were featured in the top two tiers of the "White List."
NSU’s advancement in the rankings across several scientific fields is linked to the creation and activity of new academic units. For instance, the Research Center for Artificial Intelligence has been operating at the University since late 2023. It is very active publishing it’s research and collaborating with industrial partners to implement its developments.
2025 marked the beginning of the large-scale transformation of medical education at NSU. This included the establishment of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies. Biomedicine and Biotechnology have been identified as priority research areas for the near future.
