On September 15, the ShanghaiRanking Agency released its annual Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). Novosibirsk State University (NSU) has reaffirmed its high standing in the global scientific community by securing a spot in the 301–400 range for Physics. This has been a traditionally strong field for the University in this ranking. This year’s ranking matches the University’s performance last year.
A major achievement this year was NSU’s advancement within the Russian segment of the rankings. The University moved ahead of Tomsk State University to claim 4th place among Russian institutions, behind only Lomonosov Moscow State University (101–150), the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) (201–300), and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (201–300).
Despite a slight overall decline in scores across several indicators, NSU demonstrated strong performance in specific categories. For example, the University ranked first in Russia for "International Collaboration" underscoring the deep involvement of Novosibirsk-based physicists in global scientific partnerships. It also maintained its position as second in the country (behind MIPT) in the "World-Class Research Output" category and in "Research Impact", a category in which NSU was only surpassed this year by MEPhI. NSU is in third place nationally (behind Moscow State University and MIPT) in the "High-Quality Research" indicator.
The GRAS methodology evaluates universities across 57 subjects based on 9 indicators, which include faculty potential, research output, the quality and impact of research, and international collaboration.
