Aleksey Furtsev was awarded the I. N. Vekua Prize for work in the field of mathematical physics.

The results of the young researchers awards named after outstanding scientists of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have been announced. One of the winners of the competition was Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Aleksey I. Furtsev, member of the research project "Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems" of the MCA. For the series of works "Analysis of mathematical models of inhomogeneous elastic structures" he was awarded the I. N. Vekua Prize for work in the field of mathematical physics.

In this series of works, a number of boundary value problems are studied that describe elastic structures. These include structures containing thin inclusions, as well as structures whose components act as thin obstacles. The peculiarities of the considered boundary value problems include the fact that the domain in which they are posed has an essentially non-smooth boundary, and also that these problems are nonlinear in general. In the papers, various formulations of problems and the connection between them (variational formulations, boundary value problems) are studied, existence theorems for weak solutions are proved. Further research made it possible to study the dependence of solutions to boundary value problems on various model parameters: both material and geometric. This applies, in particular, to problems on the contact of plates with obstacles, a wide range of problems on inclusions and interfaces. The model of a thermoelastic body with inclusions is substantiated using asymptotic analysis based on variational formulations. The results obtained are of theoretical interest and are also important from a practical point of view, since they relate to the problem of the correctness of mathematical formulations of problems, which plays a key role in mathematical modeling and the development of efficient numerical methods.

The MCA team congratulates Aleksey on receiving the award!
