The summer school-conference on cryptography and information security finished at NSU

Summer school-conference with international participation "Cryptography and Information Security — 2022" in memory of Professor Sergei F. Krendelev — an event held annually within the walls of NSU and organized by the Novosibirsk Cryptographic Center, the International Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok, the organizing committee of the NSUCRYPTO Olympiad, as well as representatives of the Department of Information Technology and Department of Mathematics and Mechanics of NSU.

For two weeks, teachers, project curators and lecturers from Novosibirsk, Moscow, Taganrog, Kaliningrad and India worked with the participants of the school. Within the framework of the school, students listened to dozens of lectures, participated in a round table, and most importantly, conducted real research in small groups under the guidance of curators. The topics of the projects were related to topical issues in the field of investigating IT crimes, blockchain technologies, methods of cryptanalysis of modern ciphers and decryption of old manuscripts.

Natalya Tokareva, head of the summer school, Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, notes:
A separate highlight of the past summer school was the project to decipher the diaries of Baroness M. V. Prittwitz, whose granddaughter worked for a long time as the press secretary of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences and did a lot to preserve its history. We have restored the entries of the diaries of the Baroness of 1893–1894. They were conducted in Russian, English, Italian and French with the text superimposed across the already written and using small handwriting. Thanks to the integral museum of the living history of Akademgorodok for the opportunity to do this work.
In the future, all studies of school participants will be continued and brought to publications. As a result of the work at the school, 100-page abstracts with the results of the students' work were published, you can see them here.

Evelina Pivneva, a student of the MMF NSU, comments:

I want to express my deep gratitude for the opportunity to learn so many new things, to meet wonderful people. This school is a challenge to itself. Try something you've never done before. Difficult but very interesting! At first I thought that nothing would work out, a lot of new information, but gradually, not without the help of the curators of the project and its participants, I joined this cryptographic life, began to understand a lot, and made, albeit a small, contribution to the project. Now I'm thinking of going into cryptology. Coffee breaks, sports activities, cryptoquest, round table and pizza chain - everything was at the highest level! Separately, I would like to thank all the lecturers and curators. Very informative lectures presented in a simple language and interesting projects (I wanted to try myself everywhere). Hello cryptoworld!

The school was successfully completed by 48 participants, including students and graduate students of NSU, the Baltic University, Tomsk State University, Siberian Federal University, Novosibirsk State Technological University, Moscow State University, Reshetnev Siberian State University, graduates of the Specialized Educational and Scientific Center of NSU and even teachers of Novosibirsk State University. All of them successfully made presentations at the final conference of the school on July 11.

The organizers will continue to work with school participants as part of a professional retraining program in the field of cryptography, which will last until March 2023.
