The Great Mathematical Workshop announces its call for projects

What happened?
The Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok begins accepting projects for their implementation at the Great Mathematical Workshop 2022.

What is the Great Mathematical Workshop?
GMM is an event where teams of students work on various projects. At the heart of each project is an open problem — mathematical or near-mathematical. Students work at the Workshop accompanied by curators and experts assigned to each project team.

In terms of time, the Workshop consists of three parts: a week of intensive work, then the so-called “inter-module” of more relaxed activities, and finally, another week of intensive work. In 2022, the first module of the Workshop will take place from July 24 to 30, and the second module — from August 7 to 13. The work of the Workshop will be held offline in Novosibirsk (on the campus of Novosibirsk State University) and in Tyumen (on the campus of Tyumen State University).

This year, the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok organizes such an event for the third time. In 2020, it was held under the name "The First Workshop of the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok", and in 2021 it acquired its current name "The Great Mathematical Workshop".

What is a project?
A project is the mathematical or near-mathematical problem formulated by the customer. The customer can be a scientist, then the task is some open scientific question related to his/her research. Moreover, the customer can represent some area of the industry. Then the task is likely to be related to a production process. The range of customers is not limited to scientists and entrepreneurs. The customer can be a farmer, an architect, a student, a politician, etc. The main thing is that the problem should be open, that no one has yet solved it.

Why do customers need it?
Generally speaking, the customer is interested in the implementation of his project. The customer does not pay for solving the problem, he receives a team of students who solves it — or makes significant progress in solving it — and provides the result. Of course, the students will need customer's time and expertise, but in the end he/she can get a fundamental result, or development, or a software product, as well as connections with students and scientists that will be useful in the future.

Why do students need it?
Year after year, we are convinced in practice that GMM is engaging, exciting and promising. Students learn to work in a team, find ways to solve new problems, formulate results. In addition, they form connections with potential academic advisors and employers, as well as develop a base that will help start a grant application, commissioned R&D research, contract or startup.

How to submit a project?
In order to submit a project, the customer needs to formulate a task for the project and fill out the form at https://forms.yandex.ru/u/623c334724f61e8d0a3c5479/. You can submit a project until May 2, 2022 inclusive.

One important note — as the the Workshop will be held offline, we will only host projects in Russian language. If you do not speak Russian or will not be able to come to our venue, you can collaborate with your Russian colleagues to assist you in the creation and development of your project in the framework of the Great Mathematical Workshop 2022.

What if I want to submit a project, but I cannot formulate it in mathematical language?
Write as you can, and then we will help. For advice on any questions about the Great Mathematical Workshop, write to the MCA mail mca@nsu.ru.

When can students enroll in GMM projects?
Projects 2022 will appear on the Workshop website by mid-June. Then students can sign up to participate.
