NSU launches online course "Linear Algebra: Matrices and Mappings" on Coursera

The new course "Linear Algebra: Matrices and Mappings" on Coursera from Novosibirsk State University will help you study the methods of linear algebra, which are now widely used: from cryptography and neural networks to video processing. The lectures will be useful both for students of physics and mathematics, technical and natural sciences, as well as for economists and sociologists.

You can sign up for Coursera and start learning now.

The methods of linear algebra are used in solving systems of linear differential equations, in the study of liquid and gas flows, in the analysis of large data sets of any nature, in the development of quality control protocols for industrial products, in neural networks, in cryptography, in video, image or sound processing.

Many studies of linear algebra are relevant to economics, engineering and natural sciences due to the method of principal components - one of the most popular ways to process large amounts of data.

The course was authored by Pavel Kolesnikov, Professor of the Chair of Algebra and Mathematical Logic, Mathematics and Mechanics Department, NSU, and Timur Nasybullov, Researcher of the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok, Senior Lecturer of the Chair of Algebra and Mathematical Logic, MMD NSU.

Pavel Kolesnikov, one of the course authors, said:

The online course "Linear Algebra: Matrices and Mappings" can be useful for those who attend regular courses in higher algebra and/or analytical geometry and want to better understand some sections: our course offers to look at a number of issues from a slightly different angle. The course we have launched will be able to give a more voluminous picture of the classical section of mathematics, which has recently become the basis for solving numerous practical problems in different spheres of life.

The course consists of five modules: they include 45 video lectures, intra-lecture questions to consolidate the material passed, graded tests based on the results of mastering each module of the course, the final test and presentations for the course.

The first module is devoted to vector space, in the second module teachers will talk about linear mappings. The third module of the course will introduce systems of linear equations and their applications in solving applied problems. Within the framework of the fourth module, students will get acquainted with the Jordan form, which is important for solving many theoretical problems. The last, fifth module, is devoted to symmetric and orthogonal linear operators and their applications, for example, for solving optimization problems.

Lilia Styazhkina, head video production department of NSU, said:

The Linear Algebra course was created with grant support from Coursera. In December 2020, a competition was announced, during which the priority directions for the platform were announced, and it is especially gratifying for me that in the field of linear algebra our interests coincided. After all, as we know, the university has a very strong Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, and its teachers managed to prepare a really popular current course that can be useful to students and specialists from completely different fields: from natural sciences to IT.

All course materials, including graded assignments, are free of charge to all participants. For students and teachers of NSU, Higher College of Informatics NSU and Specialized Educational and Scientific Center of NSU, registered in the Coursera campus program, certificates of successful completion of the course are also free. If you are not registered in the program yet, this is easy to fix: submit an application in your personal account or write to echevskaya@gmail.com.
