The Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok held a conference "Women in Mathematics"

On May 12, 2021, the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok held a conference "Women in Mathematics", timed to coincide with the International Day of Women in Mathematics. At the conference, scientific talks were made by researchers of the Mathematical Center and laboratories of the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics SB RAS in various areas of mathematics.

The event was held in a mixed format: some of the performances were in-person, and some were broadcast. In total, the conference was attended by about a hundred people.

In his welcoming speech, the director of the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics Sergey S. Goncharov noted:

Events that are entirely devoted to highlighting the outstanding mathematical achievements of women researchres are not uncommon in the West, but they are not often held in our country. I hope that this conference will establish a good tradition that will develop and cover an ever-larger audience. Such conferences provide an excellent opportunity to draw the attention of the world mathematical community to the merits of women mathematicians and to more clearly communicate their achievements. Our goal is to maintain and develop an equal and comfortable working environment for all talented researchers, no matter men or women.

The conference began with a talk by Elena V. Konstantinova, a researcher of MCA, who spoke about the results of the work of Mariam Mirzakhani and her short brilliant path in mathematics: this outstanding woman died from the effects of oncology in 2017 at the age of forty.

The rest of the talks were devoted to research in various fields of mathematics, which are carried out by the research teams of the Institute of Mathematics.
