The ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022 assesses universities in 54 subjects in the sciences: engineering, wildlife sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences categories. It has been published annually since 2009. Over the past few years, NSU has participated in the Rankings and this year NSU was first among Russian universities (group 401-500) in Chemical Engineering and in Physics it was in the top 200 universities in the world (group 101-150).
Mikhail Fedoruk, NSU Rector and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, discussed the rankings,
Everyone knows NSU and Akademgorodok as a place where world-class fundamental research is conducted. High positions in the Physics ranking, such as elementary particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics, nonlinear photonics, radiation technologies and synchrotron-neutron research, are traditionally strong areas for us. However, it is equally important to receive signals about our movement in technological directions. Last year, the University, in partnership with high-tech companies, opened the National Technological Initiative (NTI) Center for New Functional Materials that is working on the creation of materials with specific properties, including the use of artificial intelligence technologies.
The ShanghaiRanking is recognized as one of the oldest and most respected university rankings in the world. The study is based on six objective metrics including the number of alumni and staff who have been awarded Nobel or Fields Prizes, the number of frequently cited scientists, the number of papers published in Nature and Science, and other objective metrics available in open sources. Every year, thousands of universities are evaluated in the Ranking and the top 500 of them are selected. Earlier, we reported that NSU entered the TOP-500 of 19,788 universities and research institutes in the world.
