On June 10, at the seminar of the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok, Ivan Bondarenko will talk about "Deep neural networks in the service of computational linguistics"

The seminar will be held in room 4109 of NSU at 6 pm. You can also watch it online via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9421270845.

Title: Deep neural networks in the service of computational linguistics
Speaker: Ivan Bondarenko

Abstract: As the classic wrote, "Labour created man himself". This idea, beautiful in its brevity, can only be slightly clarified that labor is not just labor, but collective labor. And where there is a team, there is communication, communication, language. Therefore, communication skills can be considered an integral property of human intelligence. The study of human communication with the help of language is the science of linguistics. And when it comes not to "natural" intelligence, but to its artificial counterpart, many researchers believe that artificial intelligence should be spoken. How do you create such a conversational AI? To solve this problem, we also need linguistics, but not simple, but computer science. The languages in which people speak and write have a fundamental property - they, unlike, for example, programming languages, are non-deterministic and difficult to formalize (or not formalized at all). Therefore, in order to build good, practically useful language models, computational linguistics cannot be limited to only formal methods, but needs the help of machine learning. And at our seminar, we will try to figure out how machine learning and, in particular, its most advanced area — deep learning — helps to analyze and understand texts in natural language.
