Theatres
There are about 20 theaters and theater studios in Novosibirsk. Many of them have become symbols of the city that the local residents take pride in. A high level of activity in this area is a signature feature of Novosibirsk.
Globus
The theater building is one of the most recognizable in the city. The theater was created as a place for the cultural education of children and youth, but today from the original Young Spectators’ Theatre it has grown into a truly adult theater. If you want a fresh look at the work of a stage director, attend non-standard performances that do not fit into the classical theatrical performance model that have received the highest awards. Globus is one of the most active theaters in the city, which produces 10 premiere shows a year.
The Novosibirsk audience especially liked productions of "August: The Osage County," "The Kreutzer Sonata", "West Side Story", "NEP", and "Bratishki".
The Red Torch Theatre
Before the Revolution, the building hosted the Merchants' Club, where the rich people of the city gathered for business and social meetings. It was the first building in the city with an auditorium and stage. Later, during the Soviet era, it housed the City Council and was also the place in front of which rallies were held. Finally, in 1932 the building was taken over by a talented Red Torch troupe from Odessa. It gave its name to the theater and glorified it.
The Red Torch is the richest theater in the city after the Opera and Ballet Theatre. A large, well-decorated theater with excellent acoustics, these elements are key to the perception of quality associated with theater performances. Audiences and critics particularly praised the performances “KILL” and “Dovlatov. Jokes" as well as "Without a Word".
Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre
Welcome to the largest Russian theater! If you feel that you are ready for a time-tested introduction to the art, it's the best place in town. Enormous productions that other theaters in the country cannot accommodate are a good reason to buy a couple of tickets to attend a performance. In addition to spectacular views, you can marvel at the largest monolithic dome in the world with a diameter of 60 meters and a chandelier weighing 1730 kg.
The ticket frenzy continues all year round, but it is especially hard to get tickets to the theater before the holidays. You can see a lot of classical performances in the theater including the ballets "La Bayadere", "Swan Lake", "Spartacus", "Coppelia", "Giselle"; the operas "La Traviata", "Queen of Spades", "Carmen", "Boris Godunov" and others.
Afanasyev Theatre
It’s the smallest theater in the city, hidden behind an unmarked door between some clothes shops, but it is the proudest and the most independent theater in Novosibirsk. In a theater that only accommodates several dozen people the troupe shows the most elite and original productions. Sometimes it is more difficult to get tickets to this theater than to the Opera and Ballet Theater. This is the only author’s theater in the city, with Sergey Afanasiev as its premanent leader since 1988.
The audience particularly likes the performances Jokes in the Middle of Nowhere, Do not Leave Your Lovers, The Inspector General.
Theatre Stary Dom (“The Old House”)
Stary Dom is one of a few theaters in the city that tries to present comedy and melodramatic stories about life to the audience in a new light. They transform long-forgotten plays into something new and innovative for the audience and give them a chance to experience pure and genuine emotion.
Stary Dom is the most frequently touring theatre group in Novosibirsk.
The Puppet Theatre
Each year the Puppet Theatre stages 350 performances and tours extensively around the world.
