NSU Students Successful at International Mathematical Olympiad in Bulgaria

The 25th International Mathematical Student Olympiad took place at the end of July in Bulgaria. The Novosibirsk State University team successfully participated, significantly improving its results from the previous year.

The International Mathematical Student Olympiad is conducted in Blagoevgrad at the American University in Bulgaria. This year the event celebrated its 25th anniversary. Students from 125 universities around the world participated, representing every continent except Antarctica. 70 universities were entered in the team competition.

Novosibirsk State University was represented by Igor Fedorov (Mechanics and Mathematics Department), Yulia Lim (Mechanics and Mathematics Department), Danila Belousov (Mechanics and Mathematics Department), Dmitry Morozov (Physics Department), Maxim Geniman (Natural Sciences Department) and Alexander Snadin (Natural Sciences Department). The team result was a great improvement over last year with the students winning three silver and three bronze medals.

Alexander Snadin from the Natural Sciences Department talked about his participation,

The Olympics in Bulgaria was very interesting and challenging, the trip provided a lot of experience. I participated in Mathematics Olympiads when I was in school and decided to continue at University even though I entered the Natural Sciences Department. Our Department has mathematical subjects but I also take a special course for the Olympiad and do a lot of individual work on mathematics.

The Olympiad consists of two rounds. Each round lasts five hours and consists of five mathematical problems. The jury selects the problems from those submitted the day before. Participants noted that the problems this year were interesting and diverse.

Dmitry Morozov, a student at the NSU Physics Department described the event,

This is the 4th year in a row I have participated in this Olympiad. The geography of the participants has greatly expanded compared to previous years with about 350 people participating. The problems were very interesting; I was pleased to see the wide variety of subjects covered by the problems. Usually the set consists of math analysis and linear algebra problems, but this year there were also problems on abstract algebra, combinatorics, etc.

Congratulations to our students for their excellent results. We would like to invite all students interested in the Olympiad to take part in the Siberian Mathematical Olympiad at Novosibirsk State University, that will take place in October 2018. Based on the results of this Olympiad, we will select a team to participate in international Olympiads.
