NSU Lecturer Develops Program to Identify Diabetes of the Young Type

In mid-May, the Novosibirsk Regional Government announced the 2022 results of competitions for prizes, grants, and scholarships for young scientists in Novosibirsk. Among the recipients are 18 young teachers at Novosibirsk State University, including Alla Ovsyannikova, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (ICG), and Associate Professor at the NSU V. Zelman Institute of Medicine and Psychology. Her project, "Personalized approach to differential diagnosis of diabetes mellitus types of the young", was awarded 150,000 rubles.

The project team is studying various types of diabetes of the young in patients from 18 to 45 years old at the ICG. This is the most difficult group to diagnose because they can have type 1 and 2, as well as MODY-diabetes and LADA-diabetes. It is difficult to identify them at the  beginning of the disease and the assignment of a proper treatment, prevention of complications, and in women, pregnancy management depend on a correct diagnosis.

Ovsyannikova described her work,

I have been studying this topic since 2011 when I was a postgraduate student and this became the subject of my doctoral work. To date, we have been able to examine a significant number of young patients with various types of diabetes and collect an extensive patient database. At the end of last year, the project received a Presidential grant for young doctors of science that will be spent on additional patient examinations, and data analysis. It will also support the development of a computer program together with NSU programmers.

The data obtained will be carefully analyzed and the main parameters characteristic of each type of diabetes will be identified. Based on this, a computer program will be developed. Any doctor will be able to use the program by entering indicators and comparing them with the available data. The program will show which type of diabetes is the most likely for the patient.  After that, the doctor will know how to proceed with their examination of the patient to confirm or refute the diagnosis.

Ovsyannikova continued,

It's nice when your work is appreciated at the federal and regional levels, it stimulates further development. I used to think that only certain people receive support from the state and that it is very difficult. Now I know that if you have a desire, are ready to spend a lot of time on development and filling out and providing a lot of paperwork, then you can get support and this will definitely be a great help for your work.

The author of the project emphasized that there is no analogue for the computer program in the Russian Federation.
