The international rating agency Quacquarelli Symonds (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018) published their 2018 subject ratings for leading universities in the world. Novosibirsk State University was included on the ratings list among the best in 10 subjects and significantly strengthened its positions in the natural, engineering and technical sciences.
NSU improved its 2017 position in the Natural Sciences moving from 107 to 63, the University has been in the top-100 ranking in Physics for several years. A solid performance was also demonstrated by NSU in Engineering, rising 75 positions to be rated 200. Growth was also demonstrated in the social and humanities subject areas moving up to 307 from 325 in 2017.
Aleksey Okunev, NSU Vice-Rector for Development Programs, talked about the University's success,
We have significantly improved our positions in the subject ratings as a result of creating new educational programs that expand on interdisciplinary approaches. The launch of interdisciplinary laboratories led to higher recognition of Novosibirsk State University in the Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology, and Social and Humanities sciences. The number of projects and joint events has increased, which also increases recognition. Examples of this include conferences and trips for our scientists and students abroad. We are actively developing cooperation with foreign universities, in particular, with universities in Great Britain. Examples of this are a summer school program we are launching with the University of Liverpool and joint seminars on a wide range of subjects with the University of Surrey. All of this helps us to improve our subject positions among the world's best universities.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject have been published annually since 2011. It currently rates 1130 of the world’s leading universities in 48 subject areas, two more than in 2017. The assessment of university subjects is based on four criteria: feedback from the academic community and employers and the citation and Hirsch indexes.
