The Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok will serve as a platform for coordinating cooperation between three institutes of the SB RAS and the Huawei company

Three institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences – Sobolev Institute of MathematicsInstitute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical GeophysicsA. P. Ershov Institute of Informatics Systems – and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (Russia) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok will become a centralised platform for communications and launching joint projects.

The sides are committed to promote cooperation in the fields of science, research and education in the areas of mathematics, artificial intelligence, big data and high-performance computing.

“We have several projects in mind, where we could combine scientific potential of the institute and technological capabilities of Huawei. Together, we are able to achieve breakthrough results in solving large-scale mathematical problems,” explained academician Sergey Goncharov, director of Sobolev Institute of Mathematics.

Director of the ICMMG SB RAS Mikhail Marchenko noted that the institute plans to set up a joint laboratory in partnership with Huawei with the aim of adapting mathematical libraries to Huawei processors. Mathematical libraries are used for scientific computations, and their optimisation will improve the performance of processors in resource-intensive applications that create a heavy load on the processor.

“We are grateful to Huawei for the desire to support educational programs – for example, the company provided financial support to teachers of the Specialised Educational Scientific Center of NSU. The support program for universities and institutes conducting innovative research in telecommunications and information technologies (Huawei Innovation Research Program) is also important. We hope for further development of cooperation in the fields of science and education,” added Andrey Palyanov, director of IIS.

The Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok created on the basis of an agreement on a consortium between NSU and IM SB RAS is thought to act as a coordinating platform for discussing organisational issues, conducting seminars and workshops for setting goals and coordinating.

“The MCA is interested in developing international relations, as well as in establishing integration between science, education and business in mathematics and related fields: artificial intelligence, Computer Science, etc. Huawei, being a world leader in the international digital technology market, is an important strategic partner in that process. We hope that mutually beneficial cooperation, with the use of highly qualified scientists of Akademgorodok, motivated and well-trained students and graduate students, as well as successful innovative business of the Huawei company, will lead to the achievement of ambitious goals of all participants,” says director of MCA Evgeny Vdovin.

“We strive for mutually beneficial cooperation. Therefore, for our part, we promise to be as open, honest and transparent as possible. We know that the Novosibirsk AKademgorodok has outstanding resources: strong scientists and promising students. We hope that our cooperation will enrich both sides of this agreement,” added Xiao Chunpeng, director of the Huawei Research Center in Novosibirsk.
