The International Mathematics Olympiad IMC 2024 was organized by the American University in Bulgaria and was held in Blagoevgrad from August 5 to 11. 400 participants from more than 100 universities from all over the world competed. The Novosibirsk State University team with Dzhamil Badardinov (Mechanics and Mathematics Dept.), Stanislav Elovatsky and Timofey Vasiliev (Research Group on Fundamental Mathematics at the Mechanics and Mathematics Dept.) brought home THREE medals, one gold and two bronze. The team leaders were Anatoly Ruban, Associate Professor at the Mathematical Analysis Division of the Mechanics and Mathematics Dept., and three-time IMC participant Danila Belousov.
The Olympiad involved solving ten problems over two days with five hours for the first five problems on the first day and five hours for the second five problems on the second day. The problems were of varying difficulty levels and covered areas of mathematics that were mostly familiar to first- and second-year students including algebra, geometry, mathematical analysis, probability theory, and combinatorics. The students' work was assessed by group leaders, Professors, and Associate Professors.
Badardinov described the experience,
I performed quite well, but because I had not carefully written down the solutions, I was unable to receive a full score for all the problems. Thanks to the efforts of our team leaders Danila Belousov and Anatoly Ruban, I managed to receive 10 additional points on appeal, which greatly improved my position in the overall ranking. Overall, our team leaders brought an impressive 25 points on appeal for three members of our team. I would like to express my gratitude to them for this. I received a lot of positive emotions during my entire stay in Blagoevgrad in the Republic of Bulgaria. I appreciated experiencing another country, another nature, another way of life, and most importantly, the atmosphere of an event with the best young mathematicians from all over the world.
