NSU Students take 2nd place in a major case study championship

The NSU team "Tenzor" took part in the BAT Case Competition 2017, a case-study championship in Moscow and won the second place.

The case method is a popular modern teaching technique that uses descriptions of real situations. Students are expected to study the situation presented in the case, understand the essence of the issues it presents, suggest possible solutions and decide what would be the best solution.  Cases are based on factual material or close to real case situations.

The NSU team at the BAT Case Competition 2017 included students from the Mechanics and Mathematics Department Alexander Shoyko and Nikita Bessonov, as well as Yuri Dzyuba and Dmitry Timokhin from the Economics Department.

The championship was held in several stages: qualifying, semifinal and final in Moscow. At each stage of the competition, the cases varied in complexity and format. The best five teams from all over Russia were invited to participate in the Moscow finals.

“The case-method allows you to apply theoretical knowledge to solving practical problems. This approach compensates for an exclusively academic education by providing a broader idea of business and the processes that take place in that sphere. The final was heated as mixed teams had to come up with an action plan for business development under difficult market conditions. This was done with close supervision by top managers from the company “said Alexander Shoyko.

Since the competition was tough, the NSU team consider second place a good result.

Alexander Shoyko explained the value of the Championship, “First of all, participation in events like this gives knowledge about business, provides an opportunity to look at the challenges employees of international companies have to address. Also, participants who impressed the judges at the finals were offered a fast track for a summer internship at the company.”
