NSU Hosts Conference on Sustainable Development in Russian Regions

The NSU Sustainable Development Conference dedicated to world trends, domestic experience, and practical issues related to the implementation of current approaches to the initiation, promotion, and financing of sustainable development projects in the Russian regions. The event was divided into two sections: "The Development of Public-Private Partnerships in the Siberian Federal District" and "Responsible Financing". Representatives from the banking sector and economics teachers from Novosibirsk, Tomsk, and Moscow presented reports.

The focus was on the current trend to transition to responsible financing. That means a policy by financial institutions (banks, investment funds and others) that establishes the requirements for the social and environmental risks related to activities by companies they fund and investment projects implemented by them.

Evgeny Khatskevich, Head of the Siberian State Bank of Russia Economic Department, noted that Conference participants were presented not only with practical cases, but had an opportunity to look into the future of the financial markets with “green financing”.

Khatskevich talked about his work,

Today, the state and the economy, including regional economies, are facing large-scale challenges finding financing, attracting long-term money. As a regulator, the Bank of Russia creates the conditions for the financial market to fulfill its most important function, to protect the conversion of savings into investments with transparency and efficiency. This is how we can help the largest universities in the region. NSU is already involved in this work. We have hope in science, young scientists, and students as future specialists have the opportunity to find solutions to the primary challenges that face the Russian economy.

This was the first time NSU has conducted a conference of this size on this topic. Prior to this, the format for these discussions was a small seminar. This Conference made it possible to bring together a hundred teachers, students, and financial experts. Some of the presentations were given remotely.

Vladimir Nefedkin, Director of the Siberian Center for the Study of Problems and Prospects for the Development of Public-Private Partnerships talked about the event,

The lively and interactive Conference format attracted a lot of participants. It is worth noting that the topic discussed was a new one for this region. We didn’t just hold a local scientific and educational event, we merged with our main partner, the Bank of Russia, and touched on new vectors for the development of financial systems. As a result, opportunities for active, mutually beneficial cooperation were established, and it became clear with whom the University can have productive relationships in the future.

The Conference was organized by the NSU Economics Department and the scientific-educational center “Siberian Center for the Study of Problems and Prospects for the Development of Public-Private Partnerships”, together with the Siberian State Bank of Russia.
