NSU and Kim Il Sung University to Cooperate in Scientific and Educational Programs

A delegation from Kim Il Sung University, the leading university in the DPRK (North Korea), visited Novosibirsk State University. During the visit, representatives of the two universities agreed to intensify interuniversity cooperation. The initial focus will be on student and faculty exchanges, joint scientific conferences, and scientific research in the priority spheres of chemistry, mathematics, information technology, and new materials. A roadmap is being prepared to organize program development for the coming year.

Specific activities include:

  • student internships, from one to three months, to conduct research at NSU and research institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences;

  • joint research in the field of cutting-edge technologies;

  • inviting teachers to teach courses;

  • preparing joint scientific publications.

There are numerous upcoming events in which the North Korean university students can participate. They include:

·         In April the 63rd NSU International Scientific Student Conference. This conference is a tradition that started soon after the University was founded.

·         The Big Mathematical Workshop. This is organized by the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok and the NSU Mechanics and Mathematics Department. The Workshop has been conducted for 5 years, usually in the summer, and in 2024 it became international when students from a Chinese universities took part in it.

·         NSU also invited a student delegation from the North Korean university to take part in Interweek, NSU’s festival for international students at the end of April.

In 2026, Kim Il Sung University celebrates its 80th anniversary. An NSU delegation will take part in an international scientific conference organized by the University as part of the anniversary events. The two universities are also considering the possibility of jointly preparing schoolchildren for admission to Russian universities at the NSU SESC.
