The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMC-2025) took place July 28 to August 3 in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. It is the most important student mathematics competition in the world with more than 430 students from the world's leading universities participating. This was NSU’s 12th Olympiad and every year NSU students finish with honorable places.
This year, Novosibirsk State University was represented by Valery Pyatkin, Stanislav Yelovatsky, and Timofey Vasiliev from the Mechanics and Mathematics Department and Ivan Frolov from the Natural Sciences Department.
The Olympiad problems are selected by a jury. Students' work is assessed according to criteria presented by team leaders, University professors, and associate professors. The results of the individual competition awarded the NSU team four medals: two gold, one silver, and one bronze. The team leaders were Anatoly Albertovich Ruban, Associate Professor at the Mathematical Analysis Section of NSU’s Mechanics and Mathematics Department, and three-time IMC participant Danila Sergeevich Belousov.
Stanislav Yelovatsky, a 4th-year student at the Mechanics and Mathematics Department, shared his impressions of the event.
I have been participating in IMC since my first year so this was my third trip. The IMC Olympiad is conducted according to the International Math Olympiad format. We solved five problems every day for two days. The problems were not-standard and differed greatly from those we solve in Russia. The Olympiad took place in a somewhat familiar place, the city of Blagoevgrad in Bulgaria. Students from all over the world from South America to China came to participate. I was surprised by the number of Russian students, about 15% were from Russia representing Moscow universities, St. Petersburg State University, and NSU. In my free time from solving problems, it was nice to talk to everyone and take a walk.
In the team competition, NSU students beat the teams from the Higher School of Economics and Moscow State University, taking 15th place. This is the best result in the last 10 years of the University's participation in the IMC. Congratulations to the NSU students for their excellent result!
