NSU Scientists Develop Biosafety Manual

NSU scientists recently completed the book "Fundamentals of Biosafety" that is devoted to the principles and methods for safely working with pathogenic microorganisms. The team included Sergey Netesov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biological Sciences, and Professor at the NSU Natural Sciences Department, Mamedyar Azayev, Doctor of Biological Sciences and Associate Professor at the NSU V. Zelman Institute of Medicine and Psychology of NSU, and top specialists at the State Scientific Center for Virology and Biotechnology "Vector".

Netesov described the book’s history,

This initiative started seven years ago when we first decided to prepare a short textbook for medical cadets and biologists at “Vector” and then realized that it could be a manual for NSU students. This publication was released with a small circulation in 2016. Then, unexpectedly, the INFRA-M publishing house received copies of the book and it won first place for best scientific and educational publication in the Healthcare category at the II All-Russian competition "ACADEMUS" in 2017. After that, the publishing house invited us to prepare a larger and more detailed manuscript for publication.

The training manual defines terms in the field of biosafety, its basic principles and practices, and summarizes the author’s extensive practical experience with causative agents of dangerous human viral infections and their components. The book was written for a wide range of specialists in the field of biosafety, microbiology, virology, and biotechnology.

The book "Fundamentals of Biosafety" is largely a continuation of the lectures that Sergei Netesov and his colleagues developed for courses on how to work safely with microorganisms at "Vector". The courses started in the early 2000s on the basis of WHO documents and biosafety rules from US, Canada, and Russia.

The book will be published at the beginning of 2020.
