NSU in Top 5 Best Russian Universities for Interdisciplinary Research

The Times Higher Education (THE) published the second edition of their global ranking of interdisciplinary research. It evaluates 911 universities from 94 countries including 44 Russian universities. For the second year in a row, NSU is among the top 5 best universities in Russia (ranking 4-7). It is ranked behind Moscow State University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University and RUDN (People’s Friendship) University, and shares it’s rating with Higher School of Economics, Southern Federal University, and Ural Federal University. In the international ranking, NSU took 201-250th place.

This ranking is primarily based on objective criteria from the SCOPUS scientometric database and a survey of researchers from around the world (65% of the ranking; results, outputs). In addition to this, there are qualitative indicators : "availability of opportunities for interdisciplinary research", "support from management", "a system for encouraging interdisciplinary research at the university", "availability of indicators of success in interdisciplinary research" (16% of the ranking, process). Another 19% is accounted for by the indicator "funding for interdisciplinary research" (input).

Unlike last year's ranking, which only considered interdisciplinary research in natural sciences, life sciences, and computer science, this year it includes one or more of the non-STEM disciplines: social sciences, education, psychology, law, economics, or clinical health.

Mikhail Fedoruk, NSU Rector and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, provided more details,

NSU holds high positions in funding for interdisciplinary research and results - fourth and seventh place in Russia, respectively. Over the past 5 years, the number of publications in high-ranking international scientific journals by Novosibirsk State University researchers has increased by 30% and the number of citations in SCOPUS in 2024 reached 1991. We expect that by the end of 2025, the total volume of funding for scientific research, including non-budgetary sources, will be 4 billion rubles. Unlike a single research institute, which has a specific specialization, NSU can initiate interdisciplinary projects, attract funding for them, create consortia, and involve other institutions in the joint implementation of projects. Thus, NSU acts as an integrator and a magnet for attraction on the level of a Novosibirsk scientific center.
