International Conference “Spain and Russia: The History and Today”

The conference “Spain and Russia: The History and Today” was organized and conducted by the Center for Spanish Language and Culture at the NSU Humanities Institute. The main objectives of the event were to strengthen ties between the two countries and to promote the Spanish language and culture. Presentations by guests and NSU students were given in Spanish with simultaneous translation.

Irina Sukhinina, Associate Professor at the NSU Humanities Institute Intercultural Communication Section teaching English and Romano-Germanic Philology, Acting Director of the Center for Spanish Language and Culture, and Spanish language teacher, discussed the event,

We wanted to compare our cultures and historical roots in order to identify similarities and differences in the historical and cultural development of Russia and Spain. At the Conference, we were able to identify common ground and analyze the relationship between our countries today. NSU is actively cooperating with the University of Cadiz because it has a unique Spanish-Russian University Center and the Pushkin Institute Center of Russian Language and Culture that is headed by Andres Santana Arribas. It is thanks to Professor Santana Arribas that we are developing inter-university relations.

Guests from Spain and NSU teachers and students were invited to participate in the Conference. Foreign guests included Javier Torres Hernandez, First Technical Consultant to the Diplomatic Mission for Education at the Spanish Embassy in Moscow, Pablo Gaston Di Tata Francia, Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Spain in Russia for the Siberian Federal District and Professor Andres Santana Arribas.

Honorary Consul Di Tata Francia had this to say about his visit, “I have only positive impressions of the University. I especially liked the campus and the level of education of the students who presented excellent work and demonstrated excellent Spanish language skills. I think this event will only support and strengthen cooperation”.

Exchange programs between NSU and the University of Cadiz have existed for a long time. Currently, students from Spain are studying at NSU and students from the NSU Economics Department and Humanities Institute study at the University of Cadiz under the auspices of the Erasmus + program.
