The New NSU Campus: What It Would Be Like?

Starting in 2021, work began in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok to implement an important National Project - the construction of a modern, world-class high-tech campus at Novosibirsk State University. Below, we will tell you more about the requirements for creating the campus, construction plans, the current state of the project, and the strategic plans for the University in the future.

How it all began

In March 2021, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin issued to create 25 modern higher educational organization campuses from 2022–2030. By December 1, 2022, three projects began their implementation. During a visit to Novosibirsk State University, Mikhail Mishustin Prime Minister RF, Valery Falkov Minister of Science and Higher Education RF, Andrei Travnikov Novosibirsk Region Governor, and Rector of NSU Mikhail Fedoruk discussed a new concept for the development of the University campus. This concept established that in the next decade NSU will increase the number of undergraduate and graduate students and expand the range of technological areas. This requires infrastructural changes. As a result of the discussion, it was announced that the Novosibirsk Region will become one of the three pilot regions for the project to build world-class campuses and the University began to develop designs and prepare the territory allocated for construction.

What buildings are being built

The world-class campus plan involves the expansion of educational, scientific, and housing infrastructure to meet the needs of both schoolchildren at the Physics and Mathematics School (SESC NSU) and University students.

The SESC NSU educational building will provide gifted children from all over the country with a wide range of opportunities for self-realization in education and science. The leisure center will provide them comfortable conditions for engaging in creative activities, communication, and the implementation of joint creative projects. A 690-bed student residence complex with a new residential design will improve the quality of student life by providing opportunities for independent project work, individual studies, and innovation development together with infrastructure for sports and leisure activities.

A University classroom building, a new type of scientific library, and a student project center will become platforms for engineering and innovation activities, full immersion in the educational process, and an exchange of ideas. The educational building at the V. Zelman Institute of Medicine and Psychology (ZIMP NSU) will expand educational opportunities for those who want to become high-class doctors or scientists in the field of medicine, psychology, and pharmacology. The research center will become the main building for conducting scientific research, analytical activities, working with prototypes, testing technologies for the production of pharmaceuticals, and laboratory research activities (including high-precision equipment).

What's currently happening

Work is underway on both the first and second phases of construction. Behind the main building, on the site of the dismantled dormitory No. 3, you can already see the floors of the SESC NSU educational building and leisure center and a complex of student dormitories. On the territory in front of the University laboratory building and next to the undergraduate dormitory, preparatory work is underway for the further construction of the ZIMP NSU educational and scientific building and research center.

NSU Rector Mikhail Fedoruk talked about the project,

Modernization of the University campus is one of the essential steps to achieve the strategic objectives of not only the University, but Akademgorodok as a powerful scientific cluster in Russia that conducts world-class fundamental research. Providing a good material and technical base and convenient infrastructure will allow the University to increase the scale of training the best specialists in the country in a wide range of areas who can be equally successful in research activities and creating technological solutions. I consider both of these outcomes demonstrate the success of our education because they both support the development of the scientific and technological sphere and our country’s economy.
