NSU Students Win at International Cryptography Olympiad

The results of the October 2023 international cryptography Olympiad Non-Stop University CRYPTO have been announced. In the individual round of the “students” category, Sergey Kurchev, a student at the Mechanics and Mathematics Department (MMD), received a second place diploma. Third place diplomas were received by students at the Information Technologies Department (ITD) and MMD: Nikolai Yakovlev, Konstantin Romanov, and Sergei Kotov. They beat representatives from Iran, Singapore, and Vietnam. Roman Lebedev, an ITD graduate student, won a third-place diploma in the “professional” category in the first round. His opponents were strong participants from Germany and India. 

Another noteworthy result from MMD students Alexander Bakharev, Rinchin Zapanov, and Sergei Zinchenko was their first place in the team round. They scored a record number of points (60) and defeated teams from MIT and Cambridge (USA), Vietnam, Romania, Hungary, as well as strong teams from other Russian cities. In the overall medal standings (including professionals), the MMD team only lost to the professionals at the famous COSIC cryptographic laboratory in Belgium. 

Two NSU MMD teams (Alexander Bochkarev, Fedor Kobzev, Nikolai Matrokhin and Sergey Makogon, Semyon Kochetkov, Kirill Tretyakov) won second place diplomas. A third-place diploma was awarded to the NSU MMD team consisting of Anvar Mukumov, Egor Plotnikov, and Kirill Kirillov.

Non-Stop University CRYPTO is the only international cryptography Olympiad that brings together professionals, students, and schoolchildren from all over the world. Anyone can take part in the Olympiad, regardless of geographic location. The official language of the Olympiad is English. The goal of the Olympiad is to attract young researchers to solve modern cryptography problems. Every year the Olympiad is held online in two independent rounds: individual and team. 

NSUCRYPTO is included in the list of international olympiads and the number of student winners  influences the university’s entry into the RAEX-100 ranking of the best universities in Russia. The program committee consists of specialists from Russia, the USA, and a number of European countries who are experts in various fields of cryptography. 
The organizers and partners of the Olympiad are the Cryptographic Center (Novosibirsk), Novosibirsk State University, International Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok, Sofia Kovalevskaya North-West Center for Mathematical Research, University of Leuven (Belgium), Southern Federal University, Belarusian State University, Tomsk State University , and the companies "Kryptonit", "Demlabs", and "Active". The Olympiad is supported within the framework of the Priority 2030 strategic leadership program.
