NSU’s Rector Mikhail Fedoruk and the director of the Novosibirsk branch of the Parallels Company Andrei Loveiko opened the NSU Winter School.
This year there were 89 applications from students of three Novosibirsk universities: Novosibirsk State University, Novosibirsk State Technical University and Siberian State University of Telecommunications and Information Sciences. 59 applications were approved. For the first time there is a participant from Fundamental and Applied Linguistics, a new branch of the Humanities department.
Elena Nikitina, the NSU High School Academic Director for Physics-Mathematics said that during the NSU-Parallels Winter School programme apart from working on projects, students will have very intense lectures from seven leading experts of the Parallels Company. The Winter School will give the chance not only to gain knowledge from Parallels workers and to extend students’ professional competence, but also will enable students of different universities, years, schools and departments to get to know each other and learn how to work as a part of a mixed team. The advantage of the Winter School is also that we work with first-year students who are admitted to the projects as equal participants and sometimes become project leaders as well as the senior students, Elena Nikitina added.
The joint student educational-scientific laboratory NSU-Parallels (previously SWsoft) has been functioning in association with Novosibirsk State University since 2004 (http://parallels.nsu.ru/). Since then 500 students have taken study courses in the laboratory . In total, there have been seven summer schools and two winter schools. The trainees defend their final qualification papers and master’s theses on the laboratory projects, take part in scientific conferences and contests at different levels, including international ones. The best trainees become the company interns and employees.
