NSU will host the LifeCode-2017 bio-information hackathon. A hackathon is an event where participants team up and work for several days to solve to solve interesting problems. At the end, each team makes a short presentation of the results of their work, experts rate their projects and choose winners. In reality, everyone wins — participants gain valuable experience, new acquaintances, and have a good time.
The first hackathons were focused on software development, and now they are organized around various topics. This event will take place at NSU from April 29 to May 1.
The Hackathon can be attended by programmers in any languages and platforms, biologists from any specialty, not just bioinformatics. In addition, if you are not a programmer or a biologist, but, for example, a designer or an economist, and are interested in biology, you can also be given an appropriate problem to solve. You may come with a team, or you can come by yourself, at the beginning of the Hackathon teams will be assigned.
Anastasia Bakulina, Head of Structural Bioinformatics and Molecular Modeling at Novosibirsk State University, provided more details, “Why should you participate in this Hackathon? Students and graduate students already familiar with bioinformatics, will apply their knowledge to solve practical problems. Future BAs in any specialty will better understand if they are interested in the field of bioinformatics to the degree that they should enter one of the MA programs. If you are a biologist who is afraid of a computer, or a programmer who does not know the difference between protein and DNA, this won't be a problem, projects are conducted in teams wh ere participants help each other with their core competencies. Non students are also welcome, there is no age restriction. Participants must register on the site and bring their laptops. Brief descriptions of problems have already started to appear on the site, more about them will be explained at the beginning of the event. Organizers will provide tea, coffee and cookies during the Hackathon. Experts will also be available to consult on biology and bioinformatics. The best projects will win prizes.”
The event is held within the framework of the SAU «Synthetic Biology».
