The Atmospheric Electricity Observatory conducts continuous measurements of the electrical parameters of earthquake precursors, provides the tools for tracking the development of earthquakes and their electric forerunners. This makes it possible to forecast strong earthquakes (body wave magnitude > 6) (without specifying the origin of the earthquake source) two days in advance.
In autumn 1994, during a series of strong earthquakes in the Kuril Islands signals of unknown origin were registered. When comparing the time of arrival of these signals with the time of the earthquake proved that the temporal patterns match if their shifted several dozens of hours. Thus. it turned out to be possible to record electrical precursors of earthquakes and to predict them.
The observatory can generate a reliable prediction of seismically quiet days, which is important for practical applications in such areas as construction, mining industry and health care.
