NSU Hosts V International Medical Tournament

The International Medical Tournament (MeDic House)is a team competition that invites medical students to solve complex clinical problems that are based on real clinical practice. The Tournament consists of two stages. The first remote stage took place fr om November 1 to February 11. Stage two will be held at NSU from April 20 to April 23.

Over 340 medical students (76 teams) from 40 universities, 35 cities and 8 countries (Russia, Germany, Poland, Serbia, Ireland, Albania, Montenegro, and the Republic of Belarus) participated in Stage 1 of the Tournament.

The final stage will be a real test of endurance and ability in clinical thinking for the semi-finalists.
Participants must present solutions to clinical cases based on real life practice to experts and rival teams. The format includes presentations, opposition, peer review of solutions by other teams (small group discussion), preliminary diagnosis, prescriptions for additional patient examinations, and a treatment plan. Teams must competently present their cases to convince their colleagues and be ready to answer any questions from the experts.

25 teams from Russia, Germany, and Serbia compete for the title again this year. Teams from Poland, Ireland and Montenegro are competing in the finals for the first time. 13 teams will compete in the English-speaking league wh ere all aspects of the Tournament are conducted in English and 12 teams will compete in the Russian-speaking league.

Vladimir Pustylnyak, Deputy Director NSU Institute of Medicine and Psychology, talked about the Tournament,

By providing the international student community an opportunity to meet for several days and analyze complex professional cases, this event greatly expands the capabilities of our students. It is clear we are not alone in this assessment, the number of applications from Russian and foreign universities increases every year. For example, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland is sending two teams this year. This demonstrates that our Tournament has gained a good reputation that we need to develop further.

Every year, the event brings together more and more young doctors in pursuit of experience, knowledge, and professionalism. All diagnostic tasks are based on real clinical cases that are presented and peer reviewed by experts before they are adapted for use in the Tournament.

The MeDic House project is a volunteer effort implemented by a group of students and graduates from the NSU Institute of Medicine and Psychology. It has received financial support from the Potanin Charitable Foundation since 2013. This year, the Russian Presidential Grant Fund is providing support for the final stage of the V International Medical Tournament.
