International "Mathematics and its Applications" Conference

From August 4 to 10, “Mathematics in Applications”, the largest mathematical conference in Siberia, was conducted in Akademgorodok. It was dedicated to the 90th birthday of Academician Sergei Konstantinovich Godunov, an outstanding scientist in the field of applied mathematics and mechanics. The Conference was organized by the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics SB RAS, Novosibirsk State University, and the Novosibirsk Mayor’s Department of Industry, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship.

300 participants from 35 Russians regions and 20 countries took part in the Conference. This large turnout is a reflection of the appreciation mathematicians have for S.K. Godunov. His world-famous research in the fields of ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, computational mathematics, continuum mechanics, and computational linear algebra made a significant contribution to science.

The Conference program included more than 40 plenary speakers and 200 section and poster presentations. The scientific topics included partial differential equations, equations of mathematical physics, differential-difference equations, mathematical modeling, difference schemes, computational methods of linear algebra, mathematical problems of gas dynamics, hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, and continuum mechanics. Conference sessions took place at the House of Scientists SB RAS, the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics, and NSU.

According to Inessa Matveeva, Secretary of the Conference Program Committee, Associate Professor at the NSU Differential Equations Section in the Mathematics and Mechanics Department and Researcher at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics, these conferences contribute to recognition of the University and the strengthening of international relations in the scientific community. She continued,

The Novosibirsk scientific center is a unique venue for conferences because participants have an opportunity to get acquainted with a large number of Akademgorodok institutes and NSU which is the alma mater of many talented researchers. One of the distinguishing features of our University is that most of the teachers are researchers so NSU students are engaged immediately in science. Conference participants who have come to Akademgorodok for the first time will remember NSU as a University with high-level specialists.

The Conference grand opening took place on August 5 in the Great Hall of the House of Scientists. The most important part of the ceremony was the plenary report by S. K. Godunov, “Memoirs of Difference Models in Hydrodynamics”. In this report, the scientist spoke about the famous "Godunov Method", the history of its development, the important applied problems that were solved using this method, and further prospects for its development. During the rest of the Conference well-known scientists as well as beginning researchers presented reports. Young scientists had a unique opportunity to listen to a lecture by one of the classic scientists of modern applied mathematics, S.K. Godunov, his associates and students, and other famous scientists.
