Novosibirsk State University Higher College of Informatics Student Wins First WorldSkills Russia Championship

Two students at the Novosibirsk State University Higher College of Informatics won WorldSkills Russia. Nikita Ivanov won first place in the «Industrial Automation» category (expert - Nikolay Igorevich Mashkov) and Pavel Shevchuk (expert Sergei Mihailovich Tarkov) took bronze in «Electronics».

The national interuniversity WorldSkills Russia championship is the finals for a new championship branch of the WorldSkills Russia movement for university students. This new competition took place in Moscow from November 28 to December 1, 2017. The main goal of the championship is to increase the demand for professional education that is oriented to the real needs of employers.

More than 430 winners of qualifying competitions at 77 Russian universities took part in the finals in the 36 high-tech and service skills categories. NSU was represented by 6 teams competing in the «Mobile Robotics», «Industrial Automation», «Electronics», «Web Design and Development», «Software Solutions for Business», and «Entrepreneurship» categories. These teams won the open qualifying interuniversity WorldSkills Russia championships that took place in October at the NSU Higher College of Informatics and the Siberian University of Consumer Cooperatives.

Alexander Nazarov, Head of the Department of Natural Sciences at NSU Higher College of Informatics talked about the competition:

- The championship was aimed at demonstrating professional skills. All assignments focused on the performance of specific production tasks. For example, in «Electronics», participants had to develop an electronic circuit for a device, make an electronic payment function for it, manufacture and launch the device. The assignment required competitors to conduct the entire work cycle from the development of the device to its launch. This assignment was designed for good engineers with technical skills.

Nazarov continued:

- This is the first time we have participated in the finals at this level. Preparing for the competition, we continued to build on the small experience we had participating in WorldSkills. This championship demonstrated that the basic knowledge that the NSU Higher College of Informatics gives students was enough to prepare them for the competition in a minimal period of time and be successful. We took third place in the very complex «Electronics» skill category and first in the labor intensive «Industrial Automation» category. I consider this a good result.

Overall, universities from 24 Russian regions won medals at the interuniversity championship.

During the awards ceremony, Robert Urazov, General Director of the «Young Professionals Worldskills Russia» Union said:

- I want to ask the young people here to return to their home universities and not only use the experience gained here, but also be motivated to participate in future championships, continuity is important.

WorldSkills is an international non-profit movement whose goal is to increase the prestige of «workers» professions and the development of vocational education worldwide through professional skills competitions. The international WorldSkills movement has 75-member countries.
