The QS World University Ratings published their latest ratings of the best universities in the world and NSU was ranked 41 positions higher than in the previous rating.
NSU Rector Mikhail Fedoryka explained, “The 2017 results have a special meaning. This year NSU entered the top 1% in the QS best international universities ratings. This demonstrates that the qualifications of our faculty and graduates are recognized at the highest level. For the last 10 years NSU has used a range of instruments to support the faculty members who had a desire to, and were capable of, being published in the best international academic journals. This included programs to support publishing related activities, academic flexibility and expanding opportunities for scientific research. The University is in the process of opening new educational programs that will increase interest in NSU among foreign students. It is important to note that the key element of the foundation for NSU’s success was laid 60 years ago when the University was created based on the principle of ‘education through research’. Akademgorodok’s founder Mikhail Alekseevich Lavrentyev wrote, ‘There were people who believed that our university should ‘keep up with the times’, to develop on the basis of long established standards and the Siberian Division will do its best to create a new model for an educational institution that is as close to science as possible.’ Despite all the changes that model has proven its viability and appeal. Next on the agenda is the expansion of training for specialists in the knowledge-intensive spheres that are in high demand in the Russian economy. This is a great challenge for NSU that we expect to successfully respond to with the support of our partners: Akademgorodok institutes, companies that are residents of Technopark Akademgorodok and Biotechnopark Koltsovo, as well as other enterprises and organizations the University cooperates closely with.
Zoya Zaitseva, Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at QS Ltd., was impressed with NSU’s dynamic development and offered her expert assessment, “There will not be five Russian universities in the Top 100 in the next couple of years. In my opinion, the only university that has a chance to be in the region of the 150th place, is Novosibirsk State University. If they keep the momentum, and the Ministry not only helps them financially, but also minimizes bureaucratic processes, so that more time remains for the science and development of the University, NSU will be able to enter the top 150 or top 200 in a few years."
The rating of the best universities in the world is based on a global study of indicators for educational institutions' achievements in the fields of education and science. Today, the QS World University Rankings is considered one of the most influential global university rankings. It was developed in 2004 by Quacquarelli Symonds together with the British “Times Higher Education” publication.
QS ratings are compiled on the basis of six indicators: reputation in the academic community (this is the most important criteria), employer attitudes towards the graduates, university faculty citations in scientific publications, the student/teacher ratio, and the number of foreign faculty and students at the university.
